Overview

Step into the depths of Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), Belize’s most revered and enigmatic archaeological site. Also known as the “Cave of the Stone Sepulcher,” ATM holds profound spiritual importance for the ancient Maya, who believed it to be a gateway to the underworld. Inside, the Maya performed sacred rituals and ceremonies, leaving behind a wealth of artifacts and human remains that provide a fascinating glimpse into their mysterious culture and spiritual practices.

Among the cave’s most haunting features is the famous “Crystal Maiden,” the skeletal remains of a young woman believed to have been sacrificed. Over centuries, her bones have become covered in shimmering calcite, earning her a striking crystalline appearance. The cave is also a treasure trove of Maya pottery, tools, and human remains, offering a fascinating look into the past.

ATM Cave is not only an archaeological wonder but also a natural marvel. With its breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, and winding underground rivers, the cave offers a visual spectacle unlike any other. However, accessing its beauty is no small feat—it requires swimming, navigating narrow passages, and a readiness for adventure.

Due to its fragile ecosystem and irreplaceable artifacts, strict regulations are in place to protect this ancient site. Photography is prohibited, and the number of daily visitors is limited, making reservations essential. Recognized as the number one sacred cave in the world by the Discovery Channel, the ATM Cave is an unmissable experience for those seeking both adventure and a connection to Maya history.
