Overview

Altun Ha, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Belize, stands out as one of the wealthiest, thanks to the discovery of approximately 800 jade items. Among these treasures is the largest carved jade object ever found in the Maya world: a jade head representing Kinich Ahau, the Maya sun god. This remarkable artifact, discovered in June of 1965, weighs an impressive 9.75 pounds, stands about 6 inches tall, and has a circumference of roughly 18.5 inches, symbolizing the site’s importance as a ceremonial and trade center.

The name “Altun Ha” translates roughly to “Stone Water” in Yucatec Maya, a nod to the nearby village of Rockstone Pond. The site itself flourished as a complex and affluent ceremonial hub, strategically positioned along vital Maya coastal trade routes. The remnants of two main plazas are surrounded by 13 structures, many of which were used for religious and political ceremonies. Numerous tombs have been uncovered, revealing the site’s association with elite burials and its significant wealth.

The most famous of Altun Ha’s structures, Temple B-4, also known as the Temple of the Sun God or the Temple of the Masonry Altar, towers 54 feet above the main plaza. It was here that the iconic jade head was found, underscoring the temple’s importance in Maya religious practices. The site dates back to the Middle Preclassic period, around 200 BC, and continued to thrive until the Late Classic period, around 900 AD.

Located just 31 miles north of Belize City along the Old Northern Highway, Altun Ha offers visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Maya civilization. Nearby ponds show signs of human modification, suggesting that these water sources may have played an essential role in the daily lives and ceremonies of the Maya who once inhabited this vibrant center.
