Overview

Perched majestically on a hilltop overlooking San Ignacio Town, Cahal Pech is one of Belize’s most intriguing Maya sites. But don’t let its unusual name, meaning “Place of Ticks” in the Maya language, fool you—this archaeological gem is teeming with history, culture, and breathtaking architecture.

Cahal Pech holds the distinction of being the oldest known site in western Belize, with evidence of occupation dating as far back as 1200 BC. The ruins offer a rare glimpse into the early lives of the Maya civilization, whose presence shaped the region for centuries.

Unearthed within Cahal Pech are hundreds of Preclassic Maya figurines, giving insight into the artistry and rituals of the ancient Maya people. This archaeological site is a treasure trove for history lovers and adventurers alike.

At the heart of Cahal Pech lie 34 awe-inspiring structures, arranged around several courtyards. The site also boasts two ancient ball courts—evidence of the Maya’s ceremonial ballgame, a vital part of their culture. One of the standout features is its well-preserved corbelled arch buildings, offering a testament to Maya engineering brilliance.

The name “Cahal Pech” has a unique story. In the 1950s, when the area was used as a cattle pasture, ticks flourished in the region—leading to its rather curious name. Yet today, Cahal Pech is known not for its pests, but for its ancient history and the fascinating stories it continues to reveal.

Whether you’re a history buff, an archaeology enthusiast, or simply in search of adventure, Cahal Pech invites you to step back in time and experience the grandeur of Belize’s Maya past.
