Jaguar Preserve Nature Hike

  • Stann Creek, Belize
  • 0 booked
  • Duration: Approx. 3 hours

Overview

Begin an unforgettable adventure through the Jaguar Preserve, a sanctuary rich in natural beauty and history. The nature hike will lead you through lush, dense jungle teeming with a remarkable variety of flora and fauna. With 19 trails of varying intensity, this experience caters to both seasoned hikers and those seeking a more relaxed journey. You can choose to trek along paths that immerse you in the local ecosystem’s natural history, or venture towards breathtaking waterfalls, such as Ben’s Bluff or Tiger Fern, where a refreshing swim awaits in the pristine natural pools.

The preserve, established in 1986 as the world’s first jaguar reserve, offers an educational journey as much as a physical one. Along the South Stann Creek River, you will learn about the medicinal uses of different plants, gaining insights into how locals have utilized the forest’s resources for centuries. Evidence of the site’s history as a jaguar research center is scattered throughout, from cages once used for jaguar studies to the wreck of a single-engine Cessna, a relic of early efforts to track these elusive cats.

A visit to the Jaguar Preserve is not only a chance to marvel at the natural world but also to connect with the region’s conservation story. What began in 1984 as a protected area, involving the relocation of a small logging community, has since become a haven for jaguars and a beacon of wildlife preservation. As you hike, you’ll step back in time, exploring a landscape that has become a vital part of global conservation efforts, all while basking in the beauty of Belize’s rainforest.
