Located in the heart of Maya Center Village, on mile 15 on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway, the Mayan Chocolate Tour offers an immersive journey into the world of cacao. Just a short drive from the famous Jaguar Preserve, this tour takes you deep into a thriving cocoa farm. Spend about 45 minutes discovering the fascinating process of farming, harvesting, and learning the rich history of how the ancient Maya cultivated and utilized cocoa. You’ll also explore the remarkable health benefits tied to this sacred bean.
As you walk through the farm, you’ll get an up-close view of the cocoa tree, where you can touch and taste the fruit while marveling at its delicate flowers. Next, visit the chocolate-making facility, where you will be taught the traditional method of making chocolate using a volcanic stone called Ka. You’ll also learn about the other valuable byproducts of chocolate production, like the shell, which can be used to make tea, and the oil, which is extracted to create cocoa butter.
The experience continues with hands-on chocolate making, where you can craft your own chocolate and create an instant chocolate drink. Sample a traditional Mayan cocoa beverage, rich with flavor, before indulging in the delicious chocolate you’ve made.
